S2E06: Janelle Woods-McNish, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation

March 24, 2020 | 31 min listen

When I say ‘no,’ it allows other people to say ‘yes.’ Oftentimes I find that when you say ‘yes’ to everything, you actually deny other people the opportunity to say ‘yes.’

Host Danielle Holly is joined by Janelle Woods-McNish, Director of Service and Giving at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and one of the newest members of Common Impact’s Board of Directors. Janelle leads Harvard Pilgrim’s employee giving and service initiatives across New England, the latter of which has an impressive volunteer participation rate of 96%.

Janelle and Danielle reflect on skills-based volunteering events they’ve lead together, including Making Good Happen at Work, an employee service and giving event for small and medium-size businesses, and Skills for Cities Boston, a day of flash consulting targeted toward alleviating local social issues for which Harvard Pilgrim was an early participant. Janelle also shares about her work to raise awareness of and end human trafficking and how being unafraid to say “no” allows her to focus on the things she values most.
