S1E27 ENCORE: Kathleen LaValle, Dallas CASA

August 6, 2019 | 26 min listen

You don’t have to wait to do this kind of volunteer work… and there’ll be different points in your life when this opportunity is something that’s practically available to you.

In honor of International Youth Day on August 12th, we’re revisiting a past episode with Kathleen LaValle, President & CEO of Dallas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). This nonprofit is dedicated to recruiting, training and supervising community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children and help ensure they have safe, permanent homes where they can thrive. As Kathleen illustrates throughout the episode, the presence of a caring, dependable adult can truly transform a child’s life.

Through Common Impact, Dallas CASA has completed several skills-based volunteering programs to boost its infrastructure, especially with regards to technology. Pro bono projects with partners like Fidelity and Charles Schwab have not only helped Dallas CASA develop a patented database of local professionals and volunteers, a disaster recovery policy and a leadership training series, they’ve also given the organization an advantage when applying for grants by demonstrating to foundations that it can successfully invest in itself to build capacity and carry out its mission of supporting local youth.
