S2E01: David Shapiro, MENTOR

January 14, 2020 | 29 min listen

There is something incredibly powerful about showing up for a young person time and time again… It is one of the most enriching things you’ll find in life.

In this uplifting episode celebrating National Mentoring Month, host Danielle Holly interviews MENTOR CEO David Shapiro about the compounding effects of mentoring.

MENTOR has helped build and serve the mentoring field by promoting high-quality mentoring, developing resources for programs nationwide and providing an activation point for volunteers seeking to share their time and life experience with young people. Mentoring can provide enormous social capital gains; the organization has found that young adults who were at risk of falling off track, but had a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college, 78% more likely to volunteer regularly and 130% more likely to hold leadership positions.

This special form of volunteering is a great way to act on your values, says David, who also remarks that you’re much more valuable as a mentor than you probably think!
