Based in San Francisco, David has an extensive 26-year history working at the forefront of nonprofit and civic engagement in volunteer and leadership development and is a Certified Rapid Innovation Lab Facilitator, Certified Governance Trainer, and Civic Change Leadership Trainer. David serves as the Director of Learning and Development at the Presidio Trust, an innovative federal agency created to save the Presidio in San Francisco and transform it into a new kind of national park.
From 2014-2017, he served as the Manager of Programs and Leadership Education at the Presidio Institute, an initiative of the Presidio Trust, where he was responsible for developing, marketing, and implementing leadership development programs and convening events that equipped and connected champions for change. For two years prior to the Presidio, David was Director of Consulting, Education, Training Services and Senior Board Governance Consultant for the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership where he was responsible for developing and managing all aspects of the consulting practice work.
Additionally, since 2007, David has served as a Senior Governance Consultant for BoardSource, where he provides project management, consulting, and training services to major client organizations across the nation on best governance practices, emerging trends and developments in the nonprofit sector, and chief executive and board chair coaching. From 2000-2007, David served as Senior Director in a number of capacities at the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. He began his career in symphony orchestra management and oversaw training and educational programs for the American Symphony Orchestra League from 1992-1999.
Active on boards, David is VP, Programs of the Association for Talent Development Golden Gate Chapter, past treasurer of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE), past chair of the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA), and past president of Volunteer Alexandria. He holds a Specialization in Design Thinking and Innovation from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and a degree in English and religion from Wake Forest University. David pursues his passion for the arts as a singer in the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and lives with his partner in El Cerrito.
